Frequently Asked Questions...

Am I too early on in my transition?

It's never too early or too late to start vocal training! No matter where you're at in your transition, we will work together to find a voice that's perfect for you. Just be prepared for a lot of work! Retraining a lifetime of speaking habits, that we often think very little about, requires consistent daily practice.

Is vocal training only for women?

This is a common misconception! Vocal training is for any and all genders. While it is true that HRT for men generally lowers their voices, this is not always the case. One study showed that 21% of men did not reach cis-male speaking pitch after a year of T (Ziegler et al., 2018). Additionally, non-binary people may wish to neutralize their voice, and gender fluid individuals may wish to develop multiple vocal profiles.

How long does it take?

Changing a lifetime of habits can take anywhere from 6-12 months of using your voice daily. We will likely not work together for that long. Our goal is to give you the tools you need to become a skillful voice user, which may take anywhere from 2-4 months. After that, it is up to you to be in charge of how you use your voice. Generally, we start off with weekly sessions, and taper off as you become a skilled voice user. Factors influencing progress can include previous vocal training, motivation, practice outside of sessions, and healthy vocal habits.
